A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However the odds had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in positions right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
